There has been a great deal of interest in terrorist use of the Internet, particularly in the role online materials play in radicalization and recruitment. However, given the amount of effort jihadist groups have put into video production for the internet, and the fact that videos are an intrinsically visual medium, surprisingly little attention has been paid to the visual element of these materials. This gap is especially notable in light of the wide variety of disciplines that have documented the power of visual images to persuade and influence. This conference brings together top scholars from the U.S. the Middle East, and Europe to address the visual component of those videos, in the belief that the better we understand these materials the better positioned we are to develop effective countermeasures.
Attendance is free and open to the public, however seating is limited, so you do need to register in advance (which you can do on this site by clicking on the button marked RSVP.) Lunch will be provided for all registered attendees. For anyone interested in the conference, but unable to travel to Atlanta, the entire conference will be live streamed on this site. Anyone participating via the web will also be able to ask questions of the speakers in the final 15 minutes of each session through a chat box included on the video player. Comments are also welcome. Unfortunately we will not be able to provide simultaneous translation of the conference, however, we have made arrangements to translate any questions asked via twitter in Arabic if you prefer to ask your questions in that language.
