College celebrates Honors Night

Tuesday, April 7, 2009 – A&S Media Office

On Monday, April 6, the College of Arts and Sciences held its 2009 Honors Night ceremony. The event celebrated the achievements of students, faculty and staff.

Recipients of endowed student scholarships and awards, as well as of departmental graduate and undergraduate awards, were honored at the event. Over 160 students and their guests attended the event, along with approximately 40 faculty and staff members.

Dean Lauren Adamson indicated that the event, which traditionally had been a very large one held during the day, had been transformed into a more intimate dinner celebration this year after much discussion. "We are very proud of our students," she said, "and we planned this occasion to more fully acknowledge their achievements and contributions."

Associate Dean for Humanities Carol Winkler highlighted several of the college's endowed student awards. "We wanted to find a way to let you all know about some of the outstanding students we have in the college," she said. "We also wanted to show our appreciation to Arts and Sciences supporters." Winkler noted, "We literally could have randomly selected any of the 71 students being honored tonight, and we would have had a wonderful story to tell." After the conclusion of her remarks, department representatives recognized the students from their unit being honored at the event.

The 2009 Arts and Sciences faculty and staff awards were also announced during Honors Night. The Outstanding Teaching Award went to Andrew Altman, Philosophy; the Outstanding Junior Faculty Award to Amira Jarmakani, Women’s Studies Institute; and the Outstanding Faculty Scholarship Award to Unil Perera, Physics and Astronomy. The Outstanding Junior Staff Award went to Eric Sarbach, Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design, and the Senior Staff Leadership Award to Todd Studebaker, Communication. These awards will also be celebrated at upcoming faculty and staff meetings.
