Sigma Gamma Epsilon

The Georgia State University Department of Geosciences sponsors the Epsilon Rho Chapter of Sigma Gamma Epsilon (SGE), the National Earth Sciences Honor Society.

The Purposes of SGE are:

  • to recognize and promote high standards of scholarship among students studying in the Earth Sciences,
  • to develop professionalization among students in the Earth Sciences,
  • to advance the career development of members,
  • to provide a fourm where students can interact with practicing professionals in the Earth Sciences,
  • to promote interaction among students at various member departments around the nation,
  • to provide guidance to students in preparation for various certifications, such as PG.

The benefits of SGE membership are:

  • obtain information on career opportunities in the Earth Sciences,
  • get to know fellow students and faculty members,
  • begin networking in the local and national earth sciences community,
  • subscription to a professional journal and opportunity to submit articles,
  • Geological Society of America member rates for registration at national and regional meetings and for purchase of GSU publications,
  • belong to a nationally known honor society,
  • learn latest developments in industry, government, and academia,
  • participate in departmental career night.

To join SGE:

  • Majoring in any branch of the Earth Sciences,
  • Complete at least 10 semister hours in Earth Sciences with a 3.0 GPA on those courses and an overall GPA of 2.67 on all college course,
  • Majority vote by chapter members to approve membership,
  • Pay one-time fee of $40.00 for membership and dues.
