Board of Visitors
The Board of Visitors is a select group of alumni, parents of alumni and friends of the college. Board members work together to support both specific programs and the College as a whole – and to recruit and inspire others to do the same. They are invaluable ambassadors from the College to the community.
Current Members
Margaret Andersen is professor of Sociology and Women’s Studies at the University of Delaware. She is the author of several books, including Thinking About Women: Sociological Perspectives on Sex and Gender. She teaches courses on social inequality, the sociology of race and ethnicity, race/ class/and gender, as well as introductory sociology. Dr. Andersen received her B.A. in Sociology from Georgia State in 1970, and went on to receive her M.A. and Ph.D in Sociology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Lee Armstrong received her B.A. in Journalism in 1968 from Georgia State. She recently retired as the General Manager of WSOC-TV in Charlotte. She entered the television business as promotion manager at Ted Turner's WTCG-TV, now cable Superstation TBS. She splits her time between her home in Charlotte and a residence on Lake Lure.
William Balzer attended Georgia State University, graduating in August 1998 with a Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies. A retired UPS executive, he currently serves on the Georgia State University Foundation Board of Trustees, where he is Development Chair, and is Board President of Theatrical Outfit.
David Blumenfeld served as associate dean for the humanities in the College of Arts and Sciences at Georgia State University from 1993 until his retirement in August 2006.
Carolyn Curry graduated from Georgia State with a M.A. in History in 1979, and went on to receive her Ph.D. in History in 1987. Carolyn is the founder of Women Alone Together, a non-profit that offers seminars, book groups, travel opportunities and fellowship to older, single women.
Jack Kelly received his B.S. in Physics from Georgia State in 1964, and is a former Chair for the GSU Foundation Board of Trustees. Jack recently retired as a Partner from Noro-Moseley Partners.
Elizabeth Kenny worked for many years in the legal profession as a litigation paralegal until 1995 when she decided to go back to school and study psychology and gerontology. Beth has served on the Gerontology Alumni Development Board.
William Pate was recently elected president and CEO of Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau. A former BellSouth executive, he serves the university on the GSU Foundation Board of Trustees, and has his B.A. in Journalism and M.C.O. from Georgia State.
Michael Stevens retired in the 1990s from a career that ranged widely through the worlds of food and agriculture. Following his retirement he earned an M.A. in art history and a Ph.D. in history at Georgia State. He currently resides in Northern California and teaches art history at California College of the Arts.
