Teacher Education Programs

Pre-Professional and Initial Certification Education Concentrations

There are several undergraduate pre-professional courses of study in the College of Arts & Sciences that will aid you in preparation for Initial Teacher Certification at the Master’s Level.  There are also three K - twelve initial certification courses of study in Foreign Language Education, Music Education and Art Education.

Pre-Professional Education Concentrations:

English:
English majors that are interested in teaching Secondary English (grades 6 - 12) should complete the Secondary English concentration that will prepare them to apply for an initial certification Master's Level program.  Click here for detailed description of the concentration.

English majors that are interested in Middle Grades Education (grades 4-8) should plan to minor in History or a Social Sciences related field. Middle Grades teachers are certified to teach Language Arts & Social Studies. For further information visit: http://msit.gsu.edu/1454.html

History: 

History majors that are interested in teaching Secondary Social Studies (grades 6-12) should complete the Pre-Education concentration in Social Sciences. This concentration allows students to choose three Social Sciences allied fields to gain broad a foundation of content knowledge. A minimum of nine hours should be taken in three of the following allied fields; Political Science, Economics, Geography, Psychology, African-American Studies, Sociology and Anthropology. Mathematics & Statistics:

• Mathematics majors are strongly encouraged to consider applying for the TEEMS program. While there is no pre-professional track for those interested in teaching Secondary Math, a broad knowledge base of higher math concepts is helpful in learning how students think about math and teaching mathematical concepts. Initial Certification Concentrations:

Art Education:

• The Welch School of Art & Design offers a B.F.A with a concentration in Art Education.

Georgia State’s College of Education is home to the TEEMS program, a very popular initial certification program that leads to an M.A.T. (Master of Arts in Teaching) and T-5 certification. GRE and GACE Basic Skills test scores as well as a 2.5 GPA from undergraduate coursework are necessary for admission to the program.  For more information visit: http://msit.gsu.edu/index.htm

Foreign Language:
• The Department of Modern & Classical Languages offers Degrees in Spanish, French, German, and Latin with a Concentration in Teaching that leads to Initial Teacher Certification.
